GOING FROM STRONG INDEPENDENT TO STRONG DEPENDABLE

Being independent has become an important goal for most of us. We see this motto everywhere. In this article, I will not discuss the being “strong” part, I will do it in another article in which we will also discuss vulnerability. Why do we want to be independent? What is independent to us? Is it related to financial matters only? How do we become independent? Can we really be independent? I don’t think so. We always need someone. We always need support from others. In our human nature, we need others to survive. For this reason, I advocate for being dependable. Yes, in a world full of “independent” people aim to be dependable, aim to be the person people come to when they need to talk or when they want a solution or even just someone to listen to them. Aim to be the person they go to when they want things to get done. This will give purpose to what you are doing. It will teach you how important it is to be there for others. Sure, it comes with lots of responsibilities but at the same time with a lot of satisfaction. Being independent sometimes isolates us from being there, from being present for the only reason that the only focus is yourself… When you are dependable your feet are more on the ground, and you notice others.

If you are lost at this point and you don’t really get what I’m saying it’s fine sometimes I don’t either. I will give you a song to listen to that can better explain what I’m saying. In his song “Count on Me”, Bruno Mars says, “You can count on me like one, two, three; I’ll be there” then “And I know when I need it, I can count on you like four, three, two; you’ll be there…” this is more like being dependable. Being independent can sound like I can count on me, me, me, me, me…

There is nothing wrong with being independent because sometimes it gives you power to become dependable. However, we should never forget the fine line between the two and that balance is key.

Wish that you have people in your life who are there at the count of one or less. If not, I wish that you become this person for someone.
