Since ancient times, the pursuit of happiness was an important question especially among philosophers. For Democritus, a philosopher from Ancient Greece, happiness is a “case of mind” and for Aristotle “Happiness depends on ourselves”.
In modern days, we are more likely to take happiness, among other blessings, for granted. However, when we are asked about happiness, we tend to try finding the most beautiful quote or the most beautiful definition. Everyone is out there, busy, working, learning, hoping for a better tomorrow. A tomorrow in which, they will be happy. Today, in the pursuit of happiness, we tend to forget that it is a decision.
Have you ever heard the song “Que sera, sera” in which Doris Day says: “whatever will be will be the future is not ours to see”? Most of the time we see happiness as a destination we need to get to. Therefore, we tend to link it to the future, and we procrastinate it. Here are some familiar examples:
I will be happy(ier) when I get my degree, I will be happy(ier) when I discover my passion (by the way you can find an article on this topic here), I will be happy(ier) when I start working…
Sure, that degree or promotion will make you happy, or finding something you love, or even winning the lottery and I am not the one trying to rain on your parade, but what if you do not get the chance to do any of these for a long time? Is putting your happiness “on hold” really the solution?
You wake up deciding that you want to enjoy the little things, the small moments that the day will bring you. These moments do not have to be complicated, from the smell of coffee to your favorite song playing on the radio, or smiling to an old lady on the street, or catching-up with a friend even for a few minutes, or even sitting by yourself and thinking about nothing in particular… Happiness is sometimes in the details we are not able to see because of our busy lives…
When you start to think that way, day after day, you will start noticing the shift your are making. You will see how much peace you are feeling even when you have every reason to be sad, angry or mad, you allow those feelings but you do not let them take over and make you stay where you are.
The journey of a thousand smiles, begins with a single one: “Laughter is the best medicine” I guess we all know this saying. And it was said for a cause. Not only smiling has a lot of benefits for your health, but studies have also shown that smiling can really trick you in being happier.
At the end, happiness has no time frame. Happiness starts now, it is already within you. It has always been. Look no further than your heart and you will find it there. Happiness is the “je ne sais quoi” that will make everything you experience better.
Wishing you a day full of little moments that will fill your heart with happiness.
