The Professional Perks of Being Bicultural and Bilingual: How Multilingualism Can Boost Your Career

As explained in my previous article, biculturalism and bilingualism go hand in hand, and being bicultural bilinguals is a huge plus in life. As Lebanese people we are (technically) all at least bicultural bilinguals, so we do not see ourselves as special. However, most of us apply to companies abroad, where it is not easy to find someone who has the same qualities that we have. Let’s elaborate on two aspects of the professional part of being multicultural multilinguals.

Most jobs nowadays require someone who speaks more than one language. People who speak more than one language are generally seen as more educated and smarter, which is why, most HR officers and headhunters seek out the CVs with more than one fluent language listed. Recruiters hire multilingual people because they want what is better for the company, and that is a new employee who has a wide range of new ideas from different perspectives to boost the business. Even though you could be given some extra tasks, such as acting as a translator or interpreter on the job, but your skills will be valued and seen, and you will be paid accordingly.

Companies who work with other companies all over the world are more likely to pick you when it comes to attending international meetings because of your multilingual skills. This allows you to develop international relationships which helps you grow in your professional field. Being multicultural makes you stand out when working with companies from different cultures, from cultures that you are familiar with. In this case, you are aware of the traditions and the ins-and-outs of the culture, which gives you the upper hand when it comes to competitive business deals.

However, some companies abroad could hire you only for their diversity quota, and they will see you as a charity case compared to the rest of the employees, thus treat you like so. It is very important for us, as educated people, to be aware of the fact that companies could be taking advantage of us and that we have every right to refuse to be put in such situations.
